Letter from the Editor
Step Nine asks us to make “direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.” The spiritual principle of this Step is love. That pairing is not an accident. Amends are not a performance of shame. They are love put into action.
Love, in this Step, is not a feeling we wait for. It is a way of showing up. It is the courage to tell the truth about our part without demanding that the other person forgive us, explain themselves, or make us feel better. It is also the wisdom to stay silent when speaking would only add more harm. That exception clause is itself an act of love. Recovery does not ask us to clean our side of the street by tearing up someone else’s.
Many of us arrived to a meeting hungry for more than food. We were hungry to be at peace with ourselves and with the people we love. Compulsive eating lives in the space between what we had done and what we could not yet face. Step Nine does not erase the past. It does something kinder and more powerful: it lets us stop dragging the past into every meal, every meeting, and every moment. It replaces shame and unease with serenity and confidence. It quiets the harsh internal dialogue running through our brains and allows presence to inhabit that space.
It reaches toward others when we admit the harm we caused and offer, as best we can, to set it right. Sometimes that looks like a conversation, sometimes a letter, sometimes it’s living differently than we did before by paying what we owe, speaking kindly, or not repeating an old pattern. It reaches to ourselves when we stop using food to punish or hide. Self-love is the decision to treat the person in recovery with the same dignity we offer everyone else. It reaches out to our Higher Power when we ask for the willingness, timing, and words we do not yet have. We do not have to take this step alone, all at once, or perfectly.
If you are working Step Nine now, you do not have to be fearless. You only have to be willing to take the next loving action with guidance from your sponsor and Higher Power. If you are not there yet, that is alright. Love includes patience. The Steps arrive in order for a reason! Honesty, hope, faith, courage, integrity, willingness, humility, and self-disclipline have been preparing you to take that action when you are ready.
If you did make an amend that you hoped would heal a relationship and it did not go the way you imagined, remember, our freedom does not depend on their reaction. It depends on our honest effort.
Love nurtures the one who gives it and the one who receives it. When we practice it in amends, carefully, humbly, and without trying to control the outcome, we are no longer isolating in secret with a snack. We are standing with our fellows, imperfect and FREE.
May Step Nine be kind to you. May you find one small way to practice Love (an outreach call, a prayer to your HP, a living amend, or a gentle word to yourself). The meetings are here, the principle is here, YOU are not alone.
